Rich Smith

I had a liver transplant in 1993 and have been involved in transplant sport for 30 years so I was absolutely delighted when football was finally introduced into the Games. I have always loved playing and watching football and after years of competing in individual events it was refreshing to be part of a team environment again. Joining Birmingham Transplant FC was a fantastic opportunity to connect my passion for football with the transplant community.

Some of my biggest highlights in transplant football come from being part of a team. It is amazing to see people’s confidence grow as they express themselves through sport and build new friendships. There is a real sense of purpose and joy in it and it helps give the whole transplant journey deeper meaning. It is not just about surviving; it is about thriving and sharing that with others.

My main goal is simple: to keep playing and enjoying the game for as long as I can. I also want to help Birmingham Transplant FC continue to grow and bring more people into the sport. There is something special about building a strong, supportive team that represents both the resilience and strength of the transplant community.

To anyone thinking about getting involved in transplant sport I would say jump in! Living with a transplant comes with its challenges but this is your chance to turn that experience into something powerful. Transplant sport shows the world that organ donation and transplantation are not just life saving but life changing. It is also a brilliant way to build fitness, confidence, and connections with others who truly understand.
